Unit evaluation for B1

This is my unit evaluation of the B1 progression unit. Here, I go through the projects and processes I have undertaken as part of the course as well as some networking opportunities that I have found valuable.

Additional Project: Diamond Dogs

Image
Outside of college, I have been doing several side projects for my dad's band 'The Diamond Dogs' mainly revolving around Photoshop. This has included the creation of a new Facebook Cover Photo and updated gig posters that are now being distributed to their venues with information about upcoming performances.  Cover Photo For this project, I was asked to create a cover photo using one photo of the band. The band said that they would like it to be similar to an album cover by 'The Ramones'. Upon their request, some wording was also removed from one of the band members' shirts and text with the title of their band was added.  I created multiple products in order to give the band a variety of pictures to choose from.  Inspiration: Original Image: Products made: Cover photo currently in use on their Facebook page: Some issues did crop up during this project, such as the limited space in Facebooks cover photo and so I couldn't make the product exactly the same as ...

Creating a website

Image
This website is a great tool to show potential employers or admission boards my work both inside and outside of college. They can navigate the website easily and see what kind of work I can produce as well as informing them of what software I can use (the name of the software used are posted along with the video/photo). It gives them an indication of my work styles and I believe it is a positive representation of some of my best work over the last two years. The post descriptions also explain what the project was for including whether it was for a real client or not and the purposes of each project.  Website link:  https://sophie97gibson.wixsite.com/website Navigating the website Home The first page you are presented with when visiting my website will be the 'home' page. This displays my logo, name, purpose of the website (online portfolio/showreel) and the tabs at the top of the page- work, contact and blog. The blog section is empty at the moment but I am planning to u...

Showreel design

Image
Research into existing showreels Subject 1 : Weston college media show reel 2020 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzy_43EV-ns Length: 1:41 Logo: College logo As this is a show reel for a college rather than a personal show reel, it takes work from a wide variety of students, including special effects, done and vehicle cinematographers and work done outside of the UK. It looks very professional and showcases the best of what they have to offer. It also matches the music that goes alongside it for example cutting on beats. As well as this, inspirational wording is also included as it matches the uplifting power of the backing track.  One thing I did notice is that it is very focused on video projects and lacks in showing photoshop and sound design projects. Towards the end there is a short montage of some smaller projects but it is unclear as to whether they are print ads or moving image due to the time they appear on screen being around a second. This is something I will need to avoi...

Business card

Image
This post contains my research, planning and construction of a business card. This is to be used with potential clients or anyone who may be interested in my work. I learned what to include, the layout and themes of a business card- for example the back and front should show similar colour scheme. This was then adapted into the creation of my own business card- to which is followed the theme of my existing logo. The only difference to my business card and professional ones was the inclusion of an address due to me not operating out of a company address.  Existing products:  Upon research of some existing business cards, I made sure to include most of the information that cropped up on them time and time again such as phone numbers and emails to contact. The only thing I wasn't able to include that was on most of the existing business cards, was the company address and this is purely because I don't function as a business but simply do my work at college or home- neither of whi...

Designing a logo

Image
For the purposes of this section, I went through researching, sketching and designing logos. The research element helped me brainstorm as to exactly what I wanted in my own logo and what tools would be beneficial to use as well as what design elements were appropriate- especially in researching that of personal media logos as opposed to globally recognised brands. I believe there has also been an advance in my photoshop work, and this can certainly be seen as I go through my logo drafts and adapt and change my idea. The first draft is significantly different to the final set design in terms of professionally and the overall look. I believe that by using photoshop more, I have advanced my existing skills and can now use them in a more professional sense than I was before. My research backed this the whole way through the process.  Following on from this, I also problem solved. The main issue that cropped up was the fact that my logo was coloured and that the written text wasn't enti...

Personal Statement

Image
This post shows my first and final draft of my personal statement. This is a document used when applying to university through UCAS and may also be required in apprenticeships or jobs. I used class resources which showed me how to structure my statement and what should go into each paragraphs content. I attended two UCAS workshops in college in which my work was checked by three lecturers and I made adaptions according to their advice. The final version is currently with UCAS and I am happy with the outcome and believe I have included all necessary information about myself and my works. One occurring issue that did crop up several times was the 4000 character limit and line limit. I was under the character count but it remained over the maximum amount of lines. I didn't want to strip down the statement anymore and so removed a paragraph line between the 3rd and 4th paragraph which allowed me to submit it according to both the word and line count.  First draft before lecturer ...

Building a CV

Image
Below is my research on CV's followed by two of my own CV's- both tailored towards different job types (customer service and media production). They are both quite similar apart from the personal statement which explains what kind of job I am looking for. They would be used depending on the job role I am applying for, and have both been used in the past successfully- one for my current customer assistant job and the other for a media related placement.  I believe that a lot of the other content is relevant to both job types, such as the skills section as they ask for the same sort of thing in each job e.g. technological competence and ability to work in a team etc. My experiences section doesn't change either, but I may be able to alter it after this academic year once I've completed placements and other relevant projects so that employers know what kind of work I've been involved with. I think my CV is well laid out and I've recently condensed it from two pages...
