BBC Apprenticeships talk with David Longworth.

Who was it with?

 

The talk was with David Longworth, a representation from the BBC. He is involved in recruiting and training new starters in the BBC. 

He went from being a runner, to a researcher and then became involved in production but enjoyed training new recruits and so is currently in this position. He worked his way up through the BBC and now spends some of his time talking so potential new recruits such as college and university students- giving them advice on how best to be involved with the BBC. He explains things such as job positions and what is involved as well as application processes. 


 

What did you learn?

 

I learned about new opportunities that the BBC had to offer to people straight from education. He also showed us that the BBC is constantly recruiting all over the country over many different areas- even areas you wouldn’t necessarily think of with the BBC such as engineering. I now also know how to better navigate the careers hub website and what each tab will include. It helped me think more about potential careers and what kind of jobs appeal to me. The broadcast operations job certainly piqued my interest and I am considering applying for the apprenticeship for this. A bonus is that it starts in September 2021, so it doesn’t overlap with the end of my college work. 

 

As David has done several talks with our class over the past year and a half, I believe he also has a strong part in my classes networking. At the end of each talk, he always says that he’s open to questions being emailed to him if anyone has any queries for him. 

 

David also set us a task to come up with a new original content idea for the BBC, which I will be presenting to him in January and receive feedback on. Getting feedback for my idea from an industry professional means that I can adjust my presentation and ideas based on what he says and will give me a better idea of what these big companies are looking for.

 This post shows my first and final draft of my personal statement. This is a document used when applying to university through UCAS and may also be required in apprenticeships or jobs. I used class resources which showed me how to structure my statement and what should go into each paragraphs content. I attended two UCAS workshops in college in which my work was checked by three lecturers and I made adaptions according to their advice. The final version is currently with UCAS and I am happy with the outcome and believe I have included all necessary information about myself and my works. One occurring issue that did crop up several times was the 4000 character limit and line limit. I was under the character count but it remained over the maximum amount of lines. I didn't want to strip down the statement anymore and so removed a paragraph line between the 3rd and 4th paragraph which allowed me to submit it according to both the word and line count.  First draft before lecturer ...

Research into existing digital portfolio

Existing portfolio research into 2 websites, showcasing the individual artists work with clients and campaigns. They each have more than one particular skills, and list at least 4 each that they are confident doing and have enough evidence of. For example they aren't just digital artists, they may do photography, video production, animation etc alongside it. This was helpful in allowing me to decide what I was going to include on my own website. The profiles I looked at had an effective layout and navigation of the website so this is something I'd like to adopt when creating my own.
